Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@caninelore.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes, Canine Lore is licensed by East Staffordshire Borough Council (License Number: ESBC AB0052) and fully insured to ensure the safety of your dog while in our care.

We offer a wide range of day care training activities which include Scent Detection work, Tracking, Retrieving, Bite Work, Obedience work and if required, Desensitisation & Counterconditioning programmes.

Each dog receives its own structured training plan that is designed to meet their species and breed specific needs, and along with their exercise plan this is agreed in advance with you the owner.

For day time care we have a dedicated indoor training area and scent studio, as well as a dog only snug with a fire for hanging out. Overnight care is in a home from home environment with all dogs having supervised access to our outdoor training and free running area.

  • Prior to service, all dogs must undergo a Meet and Greet followed by a Trial (for Home Day Care and for Home Boarding). The results of these will be recorded on the new dog's file.
  • For new clients, whether boarding or day care, the process begins with a joint walk.
  • The meet and greet will then progress to meet and greet at the boarding premises
  • Once further familiarisation can take place, the dogs may be taken off their leads and allowed to investigate the garden and each other.
  • At this stage, any other dogs who are boarding at the same time will be kept separate, unless each of the dogs are already fully familiarised with each other.
  • If both parties are confident and comfortable with the Meet & Greet, the new dog will be invited indoors.
  • Once a period of familiarisation with the indoors has taken place, the new dog will be shown around the home.
  • Once the meet and greet has been satisfactorily completed, a trial must then be booked in.

A Daytime Trial requires the new dog be dropped off by their owner to spend several hours with us, to ensure the dog poses no danger to us or the resident dog(s) and where we can observe for stress and anxiety.

At this stage, we also discuss the dog’s daily plan whilst in our care. This is charged at the Full day rate.

A Home Boarding Trial requires the new dog to spend 24 hours with us. Typically the dog will be dropped off or collected either before 9am or between 12.30-2pm to ensure the new dog has an opportunity to experience at least one walk with any other dog(s) that may be staying over. This is charged at the Overnight rate.

Absolutely! We encourage all potential clients to tour our facility and meet our staff before bringing their dog. You can schedule a tour by contacting us.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept dogs  that are aggressive, unruly or destructive.

We also do not accept dogs that have not been neutered/spayed (unless puppies/young juveniles). This typically applies to dogs over 18 months, but this can vary from breed to breed and rearing/individual development. So please do contact us to discuss further. We cannot accept ‘Bitches in-season’.

We also cannot accept any dogs registered under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 or dog hybrids registered under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 (e.g. Wolf Hybrids).

If your dog(s) is under 1 year of age, you consent that where possible your dog(s) will be given the opportunity to have

a. supervised interaction with the world around them including people, children and other dogs to assist with their socialisation and emotional growth;

b. time to explore the environment and be kept entertained with various enrichment activities; and

c. all training be force free and positively rewarding.

* We are not providing a dedicated dog training or behaviourist service, but we will endeavour to build on your dog’s positive interactions and engagement

* Puppies under a year old will only board or have day care with other young dogs that can cope with puppy play.

* Your puppy will be walked for an appropriate time for their age and development, as a rough guide, that is 5 minutes for every month of age (up to 12 months), twice a day.

Once the meet, greet and trial have been completed you will be free to make a booking for your dog. An initial booking shall be made by completing a Booking Form, which we will supply.
